The Human World

This section has severeal hundred photos taken in cemeteries in the Forcalquier region, in the Alpes de Haute-Provence. Almost all of them are images of old family photos that are mounted on the gravestones. The original portrait photos there are usually small, only a few inches tall. Out of respect for the families I have numbered most of them rather than displaying the names; if you would like to know their identities, or where they were from, please contact me.

A selection of these images were exhibited at the Townsend Center for the Humanities at the University of California, Berkeley, in fall, 2008, with text by Suzanne Guerlac. The exhibit was titled, Vanishing (Portraits). To see the exhibit photos and texts, go to Vanishing (Portraits).
