Tiny threads of Nostoc commune, a cyanobacterium, on soil in Idaho. Cyanobacteria are photosynthetic; they used to be called "blue-green algae". In arid lands, cyanobacteria help to prevent soil erosion, and they add the nutrient nitrogen as well. |
