Post-fire salvage logging is particularly destructive, as environmentalist Andy Kerr has put it, "Like mugging a burn victim". Forest fires are a natural phenomenon, and many animals like woodpeckers thrive on post-burn conditions. In one case I know of, in Sierra National Forest, nesting sites for the northern spotted owl were destroyed to supply logs to the timber industry.
